Bullhead derby

For over 15 years, our Club’s principal community services’ project has been to host Richmond’s Annual Bullhead Derby, which is the kick-off to the Steveston Salmon Festival.

The Bullhead Derby is held each year at the Garry Point Park from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM on a Sunday in late June.

Children 12 & under plus seniors 65 & over are invited to register after 9:00 AM on the day of the Bullhead Derby and then, from 10:00 to Noon, fish for bullheads and other non-bullhead species of fish at the water’s edge of the Fraser River. All fish caught are measured for length and recorded by fish species, following which they are quickly returned to the river.

Prizes are awarded as soon as the results are tabulated (approximately 12:30 PM). There are several trophies and lots of prizes to be won for several categories and by random draw. You do not have to catch a fish to have a chance at a prize. In addition, every participant receives a ribbon and free food coupons.

Several of our Members who volunteered their time to host this event.

The Quarry … a bullhead in all its glory has just been caught; measured; picture taken; and, about to be returned to the river.

The Fishers … actively at work on the day of the derby with help from their parents.

We wish to thank our Bullhead Derby Supporters for their continuing support of the Richmond Annual Bullhead Derby. We have included their names and web sites on the following page.
